Steve Bannon, the chief political aid to Donald Trump, has left the White House administration. According to reports, Donald Trump has fired him. A source told CNN, that he was given the option to resign, but was forced out.
His demise was has been hinted at, ever since an interview he gave with the left-leaning political magazine, American Prospect. This week, the magazine published an interview with Steve Bannon, following a phone call he made to its co-founder Robert Kuttner. It is unclear whether Bannon realised what he was saying would be quoted. Nonetheless, the comments which he made have caused a political storm within the halls of the West Wing.
American Prospect Interview
During the course of his conversation with American Prospect, he outlined his feelings on the recent crisis with North Korea. “There’s no military solution [to North Korea’s nuclear threats], forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us,” said Bannon. This contradicts the comments made by Trump when he promised fire and fury for North Korea.
Bannon insisted that China was the real enemy, and the battlefield was not military, but economics. “The economic war with China is everything. And we have to be maniacally focused on that. If we continue to lose it, we’re five years away, I think, ten years at the most, of hitting an inflection point from which we’ll never be able to recover.”
Why Bannon called up the editor of a progressive magazine to discuss political topics perplexes many. The fact that he did not question whether or not the phone call was on or off the record is also confusing. Bannon is hardly a novice in media relations. As founder of Breitbart, the political mouthpiece of the alt-right, he is a savvy media operator.
He has, however, been under suspicion of being a source of leaks within the White House administration. He was derided by former press secretary Anthony Scaramucci.
Bannon is leading right-wing nationalist in the United States. Following the Charlottesville killing last weekend, many have pointed the finger at him for being behind Trump’s comments. The President failed to condemn the white supremacist movement in their killing of a protestor. The alt-right movement was behind the demonstration that gathered far-right extremists to the Virginia town last weekend. As the leader of the far-right within the White House, Bannon influenced Trump’s comments.
Bannon had also clashed with other figures within the president’s administration. He was engaged in a long running feud with Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, the national security adviser. He has also clashed with Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, and senior advisor.
Bannon’s exit from the White House is another in a string of dismissals in recent weeks. The presidency continuously courts controversy, that shows little sign of abating. With falling polling number, many are wondering how much longer he will continue to have the support of the American people.
As for Bannon, there is no indication as to where his next move will be. Several commentators are already salivating at the prospect of potential stories he might bring from the White House’s inner circle.
