Blasting Barley into Space
In March, Budweiser announced its plans to be the first beer on Mars.
The brewing company is now moving forward with its sci-fi experiment by sending barley into space next month. Budweiser, along with several researchers, will initiate two barley experiments via SpaceXâs upcoming cargo supply mission.
The mission is scheduled to depart in December from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Once the barley makes it to space, it will stay in orbit for a month before making a return to Earth to be analyzed.
Microbrewing on the Red Planet
While floating around in space, two experiments will be conducted with the seeds. The first, to test seed exposure, will consist of letting the barley seeds live on the space station for 30 days to see how they react to their new outer space environment. The second experiment, seed germination, includes watering and feeding the seeds for two weeks to see if they grow as they would on Earth.
âBudweiser is always pushing the boundaries of innovation and we are inspired by the collective American Dream to get to Mars,â Ricardo Marques, vice president at Budweiser said in a statement. âWe are excited to begin our research to brew beer for the red planet.â
The research is expected to offer insight on what will be necessary to create beer on the Red Planet as well as provide information on the future production of barley here on Earth. Retired astronaut defended the necessity of the experiment by stating, â A successful mission will include many key components, including the need to provide crew members with commodities that remind them of home.â
