Breaking Smartphone Addiction
The Brooklyn-based startup Light has launched their second ‘dumb phone’ in a bid to get us to put down our smartphones
Light launched in 2014 and a year later debuted its first product, the Light Phone. It could only make calls and tell the time, and the company described it as a “quite a smart ‘dumb’ phone.”
The startup intended for the original to be a companion to your smartphone so that you can stay in contact but not addicted to the distractions mobile technology offers. The original Light Phone sold 10,000 models and secured $3m from private investors, but it was criticised as being too simplistic as to be impractical.
Now it is back with the Light Phone 2, it shares the same minimalist design of the original, but instead of an illuminated 10-digit number pad, it has an E-Ink touchscreen. The startup has taken its criticism on board and has added several new features.
It now has 4G support and the ability to send text messages. Light is also exploring adding some more advanced features, including basic maps, music, or hailing a ride through a company like Uber.
Unlike the original, Light says the new phone could replace your smartphone entirely, rather than just being a secondary device.
Available for Preorder
The new phone keeps the minimalist look of the original, and it has proved a hit on crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo, raising $350,000. You can preorder the Light Phone 2 for $250 starting Thursday on its Indiegogo campaign.
It aims to ship in April 2019, with the dumb phone costing $250.
