The Economist has released its list of the most liveable cities in the world for 2017. The data is composed of several different factors. This includes affordability, economic opportunities and access to essential services such as healthcare and and education. Only cities where people may want to live and visit are included in the list. As a result war-torn and dangerous cities such as Baghdad and Kabul are left off the list.

Canada and Australia
Canada and Australia feature three cities each in the top ten. This is a reflection of these destinations as hotspots for immigrants. However, their respective governments have adopted different approaches for new arrivals.
The Liberal Party govern Canada, under the stewardship of Justin Trudeau. The policy pursued by his government has allowed for a relaxed approach to immigration into the country. Trudeau recently commented that “Canadians have been very clear that we see immigration as a net positive, that we know we don’t have to compromise security to build stronger, more resilient communities,” he said. “I will continue to stand for Canadian values and Canadian success in our immigration system as I always have, whether it’s in Washington or in Hamburg next week or elsewhere around the world.”
Australia is also governed by a Liberal Party, but one of a very different hue. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull recently introduced new measures to curb immigration into the country. A new system will require immigrants to prove a higher command of English than previously required. In addition, they will also have to pass a citizenship test to prove that they have ‘Australian Values’.
Cities at the bottom have witnessed low scores due to several circumstances. The risk of terrorism and crime are factors which see their ratings plummet. As a result, Damascus sits at the bottom of the list. The Syrian capital, while broadly unscaled by the violence endured by other Syrian cities, suffers the effects of a civil war.
