Local New Yorkers and tourists from around the world gathered around Upper West Side streets for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday morning. Giant balloons floated, music played, performers danced and the crowd cheered as Manhattan’s 91st annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade marched on. The parade walked 2 miles of Manhattan and spread Holiday spirit for more than 3.5 million live spectators.

Five new floats made their debut in this year’s parade. One was a special float made by Macys, which commemorated the season of togetherness. This float featured 125 of Macy’s employees, who waved and sang to the crowd. Thousands of marchers, floats and performers also flooded the streets, but spectators were most excited to see what the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is most well-known for.

The Balloons

This year’s parade featured 17 giant character balloons that had every child reaching out. Smiles lit up the streets as Spongebob, Disney Frozen’s Olaf, and Scrat from Ice Age floated overhead. The parade also featured 28 legacy balloons, balloonicles, balloonheads and trycaloons.

Macy’s balloons date back to 1931 when the first Felix the Cat balloon was blown up and placed in the parade’s lineup. Since then the balloons have become the crowd’s favourite part of this holiday spectacle, and over the years, the balloons have begun to come in two varieties.

The first is the novelty balloon class. This class consists of smaller balloons which are shaped like human heads. These balloons are placed onto the actual heads of their handlers as they march through the parade. The second class and more widely known around the world is the full-size balloon class. This consists of gigantic balloons of licensed pop-culture characters. These balloons need to be handled by 90 people to keep from flying away due to their enormous size. They are spectators favourite part and what makes the parade so unique.
