Once and For All: Who Is a Millennial?
A US-based think tank has finally determined who is considered a millennial. The word millennial has been used in the press to insult a range of people for buying avocados and being too sensitive or snowflakes.
And now we have defined the age-range that these insults can be thrown at.
Pew Research Centre announced this week that they would be applying the term “millennial” only to those people born between 1981 and 1996. That means all millennials – at least according to Pew – will be between the ages of 22 and 36 in 2018.
According to the think tank,
“In order to keep the Millennial generation analytically meaningful, and to begin looking at what might be unique about the next cohort, Pew Research Centre will use 1996 as the last birth year for Millennials for our future work,” Pew Research President Michael Dimock wrote in a blog post.
‘The definition of the term “millennial” is an elusive one, which many use simply to describe young adults in general. But Mr Dimock said his team was able to determine a few characteristics that set millennials apart, making it possible to set a firm age range’.
The set of characteristics that have defined the age-range for millennials include that most of them were old enough to remember the September 2011 terrorist attacks and came of age during the Iraq wars.
Who Follows the Millennials?
Millennials were also between the ages of 13 and 27 when the first black president was elected in the US – largely on the strength of the youth vote. And as a plus also came into adulthood in the midst of the ensuing recession, which shaped many of their career trajectories for years to come.
As Pew writes,
“As is well documented, many of Millennials’ life choices, future earnings and entrance to adulthood have been shaped by this recession in a way that may not be the case for their younger counterparts. The long-term effects of this “slow start” for Millennials will be a factor in American society for decades.”
Finally, this generation can also be defined as the last age-range that will know a time before and after the internet and who grew up in the era of the worldwide web. While post-millennials or generation Z will never know a time without selfie sticks.
