Turns out crossing over to the dark side may not be so bad after all. Back in their time the ancient Egyptians and Greeks considered wine to be a healthy indulgence. And according to today’s research, they may not be wrong. If you are looking to improve your health you don’t need to terminate your wine addiction. You just need to moderate it and stick to red.

Mostly due to the skin and seeds of the grapes that are red wine’s main ingredient, this alcoholic beverage contains many different health benefits. That is when it’s drunk in moderation.

Drinking more than the suggested serving amount of any type of alcohol can take a toll on your health. But here are the positive health affects one casual glass a day may have.

Lowers your Cholesterol

A specific red grape used to make most red wines may have a significant effect on your cholesterol levels, according to a study from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. In this study, participants who consumed these high-fibre Tempranillo red grapes experienced a cholesterol drop of 12%. Having this control over your cholesterol and lowering it is beneficial to your health. This is because excess LDL (bad cholesterol) can get deposited in arterial walls and lead to heart attacks. So, maintaining a low cholesterol can prevent the risk of this occurring.

Protects your Heart

Red wine in moderation may boost heart health. A polyphenol antioxidant in red wine called resveratrol has been found to protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart. Recent research displays that the resveratrol found in red wine is linked to a lower risk of inflammation and blood clotting, which are common risks that lead to heart disease.

Controls your Blood Sugar

Resveratrol, which is a natural compound found in the skin of red grapes, has been studied extensively. And studies show that it may actually help regulate blood sugar. According to Prevention, participants in a recent study who took a “250 mg resveratrol supplement once a day for three months had lower blood glucose levels than those who did not take the pill”. The participants who took the pill also had significant decreases in systolic blood pressure.

In 2006, scientists from the United Kingdom (UK) also found that the procyanidins, compounds commonly found in red wine also help keep the blood vessels healthy.

Helps you Fight off Colds

Red wine may be able to help keep you cold-free. The alcohol in red wine contains ethanol, which scientists have learned boosts the effectiveness of vaccinations. In an interview for Telegraph, Ilhem Messaoudi, an associate professor of biomedical sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of California, stated that “for the average person that has, say, a glass of wine with dinner, it does seem in general to improve health and cardiovascular function.”

Another study was done in 2010 also confirmed red wine’s potential to improve people’s health. This study declared that among 4,000 faculty members at five Spanish universities, those who drank more than 14 weekly glasses of wine for a year were 40% less likely to get the flu.
