Barbie Welcomes the ‘Shero’ Line
For International Women’s Day, US toymaker Mattel has unveiled their ‘shero’ line which celebrates accomplished women throughout history.
These dolls are not your average Malibu Barbie re-makes but are designed to give young girls a range of inspirational, positive role models to play and grow with. From aviator Amelia Earhart to USA Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, Barbie has created 17 realistic-looking dolls inspired by impactful women from all different backgrounds and occupational fields.
Inspiring Young Women for International Women’s Day
In their press release for the line, the brand has said,
“As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie will be honoring its largest line up of role models timed to International Women’s Day because we know that you can’t be what you can’t see,” said Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Barbie. “Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind them that they can be anything.”
The lineup includes three historical figures and 14 modern-day women with the range consisting of Wonder Woman filmmaker Patty Jenkins, wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin, championship boxer Nicola Adams, windsurfer Çağla Kubat, chef Hélène Darroze, volleyball champion Hui Ruoqi, and designer and entrepreneur Leyla Piedayesh.
14 Modern Day ‘Sheroes’
Professional golfer Lorena Ochoa, journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, soccer player Sara Gama, actress and philanthropist Xiaotong Guan, ballerina Yuan Tan, and fashion designer and entrepreneur Vicky Martin also got dolls created in their likenesses. Barbie is also releasing an Inspiring Women collection, which features Katherine Johnson, Amelia Earhart, and Frida Kahlo, chosen for their trailblazing contributions in the fields of math and physics, aviation, and art, respectively.
“Sheroes are given the Barbie brand’s highest honour, a one-of-a-kind doll made in their likeness, in celebration of their roles in expanding the possibilities for girls everywhere,” the brand noted.
Barbie is currently encouraging women to use the #MoreRoleModels on social media to create dialogue around and elevate these positive role models. The ‘shero’ range will be available in stores later this year but you can preorder here.
