Donald Trump’s new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, has shocked even some of the most seasoned journalists during an interview with the New Yorker.
During the course of the interview, he threw accusations and slurs against fellow White House colleagues and the media. The tone certainly does not bode well for an individual who has just started in a position. Trump’s term in the Oval Office is barely six months old, yet the controversy list continues to grow.
He accused White House Chief-of-Staff, Reince Priebus, of leaking information to the press. Scaramucci appears to be on a mission to root out leakers. He told the New Yorker “I fired one guy the other day. I have three to four people I’ll fire tomorrow,” adding “Reince Priebus—if you want to leak something—he’ll be asked to resign very shortly.” He also referred to Reince Priebus as “a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac”.
When talking about Steve Bannon, chief advisor to Trump, he used colourful sexual imagery. Scaramucci claimed that he had not taken the position for self-promotion. Rather, he was working to improve America. Others, he believes, have used the surprising ascent of Donald Trump to further their own ambitions. Highlighting Bannon in particular, he said: “I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own cock”.
He took issue with the fact that the New Yorker had run a story about himself and Trump having dinner with Sean Hannity. Asking the Washington correspondent for the New Yorker, Ryan Lizza, who supplied them with such information, he threatened to fire any potential suspect. He told Lizza “I’ll get to the person who leaked that to you.”
Hinting at violence, he outlined a solution to the leaking problem faced by the Trump administration. “What I want to do is I want to fucking kill all the leakers and I want to get the President’s agenda on track so we can succeed for the American people,” he said.
Scaramucci appears to be using all resources available to him to tackle the problem. He specifically alluded to using the United States internal security services to identify the information leakers. “This is going to get cleaned up very shortly, O.K.? Because I nailed these guys. I’ve got digital fingerprints on everything they’ve done through the F.B.I. and the fucking Department of Justice,” he told Lizza.
The following morning Ryan Lizza appeared on CNN. During the interview, Scaramucci called the show to counter some of the claims which he had made during the original interview. Despite the controversial nature what the communications director had said, he informed Lizza that he was “teasing”, that is was “one Italian to another.” He also indicated that he had the full support of the president, having just spoken to him during a phone call.
It has been another week of bad news for the Trump administration. His speech to the Boy Scouts of America’s Jamboree drew criticism from parents. The White House decision to ban transgender people from the military caused outrage in the LGBTcommunity. This appears to be another blunder to add to a growing list.
